Each of the team members has a development route with purpose-designed qualifications that best fits their roles and responsibilities. Further to the qualification (which is referred to as stage 1) engineering team members also need to gain workplace experience (referred to as stage 2) of usually a minimum of three years before they can be registered/licensed and be accountable for their engineering work. Find out about the different team members and their qualification and workplace experience requirements
The exit level outcomes for the three programmes are at different levels: procedural in technician programmes, more methodological in technologist programmes and analytical in engineering programmes. A technician graduate proceeding to a technologist programme would have to move to a higher level of problem solving. This would apply to fundamentals such as mathematics and physics as well.
For example, the Engineer, which is the science-based problem solver, has to do a 4 degree (BEng) consisting of 560 hours of Mathematical Sciences and 560 hours of Basic Sciences compared to the Engineering Technicians’ diploma which consists of 300 hours Mathematical Sciences and 200 hours of Basic Sciences. See diagram
It is therefore possible to change form one role to another but it always involves extra time doing the parts of the qualification, usually Mathematical Sciences and Basic Sciences, which were not covered in the initial qualification as well as moving to a higher level with existing competencies. It is therefore important to understand the different team members and decide what role YOU what to play.
